Wedding Hairstyles: Long, Short Hair

Wedding hairstyles are a wonderful way to make the bride feel even more beautiful on her big day; however, it often is confusing to know where to start when choosing the perfect wedding hairstyle.

Should the bride work with or against the texture and length of her hair? Should she color it? Wear it up or down? The good news for these befuddled brides-to-be is that there are a plethora of hairstyles suited to each bride’s individual hair color, length and texture. If the bride-to-be wants to alleviate headaches caused by wedding hairstyles, she would work with her hair type, not against it. More importantly, the wedding hairstyle should complement the wedding dress.

Take a look at the following guide to find out what wedding hairstyle best suits any particular bride-to-be.

Short Hair

Wedding hairstyles must complement face shape, hair texture and dress. Brides are sadly mistaken if they think nothing can be done with their short hair. Short hair can be more difficult to style, but there still are a wide range of wedding hairstyles to choose from.

1.    For brides with short straight hair, consider a sleek, slicked-back bob. Create a deep part down one side and use a bit of shine enhancing pomade to slick the hair behind the ears. This simple look is well-suited for an elaborate gown and veil. The bride's hair should not be in competition with the gown; if one is elaborate, the other should be downplayed.

2.    Another wedding hairstyle for short, bob-length hair is a loosely defined wave. Simply part the hair down the middle and finger-scrunch the hair while blow-drying to define loose waves. Once hair is dry, scrunch in a bit of hair gel for holding power.

3.    For the funky and daring bride-to-be, try a Mohawk or a faux-hawk. This works great for short, pixie-length hair. Add bold accents like a beautiful, chandelier earring and bare shoulders and the bride will exude an air of class and funky sophistication.

4.    Short hair with bangs can be styled to create a simple, dramatic look best suited for a simple and dramatic dress. Blow-dry the hair straight, letting the bangs fall over the eyes. Use a flat iron to create bone-straight hair. Work in shine serum to make this style bright and shiny.

5.    Remember, accessories complete the look. Flowers, tiaras, pins or brooches can be used on short hair for an extra flourish.

Long Hair

There are certainly more options when styling long hair, but the tenets of wedding hairstyles remain the same: the hairstyle should complement the bride’s face shape and hair texture, as well as her wedding dress. The hair can be worn long and loose, in a sleek and sensual up-do or half-up, half-down.

1.    An up-do is a great choice for those with frizz-prone hair who live in humid climates. If the wedding dress bares the shoulders, this wedding hairstyle also is ideal. Long hair can be styled in a loose chignon or a slick bun. French buns are exquisite styles, but can be overbearing for ornate or complicated dresses.

2.    The half-up, half-down is a trend straight from Hollywood. It is a great choice for long hair. While this style looks good with straight hair, it looks great with waves or loose curls. Simply pull the top of hair (from hairline to crown) away from the face and secure it with a barrette or bobby pins. Let the rest of the hair cascade down the shoulders.

3.    Modern gowns look great with sleek, long hair. To achieve this look, blow the hair straight, adding a bit of serum to pump up the shine. Use a flat iron to straighten the hair, but leave sections of the hair a little bit piecey. This encourages movement and lets long hair look modern, not severe.

4.    For the romantic brides with long hair, incorporate wedding hairstyles with long and tousled waves or bountiful curls. These styles work amazingly well with romantic dresses and simple veils.

5.    Even if the bride has long hair, accessories are her friend. If there is no veil, accessorize the hair with flowers, barrettes or pins. An up-do, for example, looks absolutely beautiful with a big flower tucked into the hair. Half-up, half-down styles are complemented by ornate barrettes and pins.
