Cosmetologist Salaries

If the wide array of career options available with a cosmetology education is not a sufficient incentive to enroll in a beauty school program, perhaps the 0% unemployment rate and growing national demand for these professions will be enough.

Listed below are a few things to consider when determining if a career in cosmetology is right for you.

  • In 2005, the earnings for beginning cosmetologists ranged between $14,000 and $18,000. Generally speaking, though, the more experience one gains, the more he/she can expect to earn. This can amount to up to $50,000 per year, plus tips. As with any job, as you increase your skills and experience, you advance your position and earnings as well.
  • Self motivated? The performance-based rewards of a career in cosmetology allow you to advance at your own pace. Salons generally operate via a commission, salary or combination system. Employees are paid either by the dollar amount of the services they provide, the number of hours worked, or both. Most salons also employ both part time and full time cosmetologists, allowing you to work as little or as much as you prefer.
  • Enjoy long-term financial security with a career in cosmetology. The United States Department of Labor has predicted there will be somewhere between a 10-20% increase in cosmetology careers until the year 2010. The demand will be greatest for manicurists and pedicurists, who are expected to increase over 20% over the next several years. This projected shortage in cosmetologists means potential jobs in this field will be plentiful and salon owners may offer competitive wages as incentives to gain and keep employees.
  • As the demand for cosmetologists grows, so does enrollment in beauty schools. Currently, there are over 200,000 cosmetology students throughout the U.S. who are enrolled in one of the nation's 4,500+ private or publicly accredited schools. With an average duration between six months to a year, depending on the number of training hours required by the state in which the student will be practicing, cosmetology schools offer a comprehensive education that is not proceeded with unnecessary courses or electives.
